The Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Hyderabad commenced with a mission to deliver public health education, pursue research and advocacy and support policy development. It lays strong emphasis on pursuing public health policy, practice, training and research, positioning its programmes according to the public health priorities of the state and the nation. The institute has brought together a highly qualified and diverse faculty of nationally and internationally trained and extremely motivated public health academics and practitioners. It aims to create an environment that supports excellence in instruction, research and practice.
Road Safety for Schools in Hyderabad
In Telangana, road accidents accounted for 11.5% of all deaths and 17.8% of all injuries in 2021. The state ranked 11th in the country in terms of road accident fatalities. The annual rate of overall road injury among children in 2009 was 11% for boys and 6% for girls, yet little is known about children’s injury during the school commute in Hyderabad. Age profile of road accident victims for the calendar year 2019 reveals that the youth of age group 18-60 accounted for 84.3 percent (1,38,518 persons).
It is unacceptable for people (and children) to have severe injuries and deaths due to RTI, and it this is a huge public health crisis. Nobody should be allowed to die on the roads, especially since RTIs are preventable using tested scientific approaches. There are gaps in understanding the safety near school zones, and its influence on childrens’ well being. This project aims to fill this gap.
